Expanding CO2 storage:

The role of CO2 mineralizing rocks such as basalts and peridotites

A joint study undertaken by:

CO2-reactive rocks have the potential to increase the geographic distribution of CO2 storage.

Building on the findings of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), which highlights geological carbon storage as a critical strategy for achieving global net-zero targets, the accompanying report and data mapping tool explore how different rock formations worldwide can securely store carbon dioxide.

Explore Global Potential with the Carbon Storage Data Mapping Tool

This interactive tool brings together geological data, research findings, and project insights to map CO2 storage opportunities around the world. Users can visualize reactive rock formations, sedimentary basins, pilot project locations, and CO2 transport infrastructure. The map allows researchers, policymakers, and businesses to identify high-potential sites, assess local feasibility, and track project deployment progress.

Onshore Rocks

CO2-reactive rocks, including mafic, ultramafic, relevant metamorphic rocks, and rocks found in ophiolite sequences have the potential to serve as CO2 storage resources. It is possible to explore their global distribution and compare it to the distribution of sedimentary basins.

Offshore

Mafic and ultramafic rocks are the primary constituent of the ocean crust. Relevant ocean crust is defined as ocean crust outside continental shelves, within exclusive economic zones (EEZs), at less than 3,000 m water depth, and with less than 2,000 m of sediment cover
